Lofty Indulgence

Jim is gone AGAIN!  This time he’s in the Smokey Mountains hiking the Appalachian Trail with some of his co-workers. Am I sad that he didn’t take me?  NO!  I am a big fan of air-conditioning, soft mattresses and indoor plumbing.  He left on Thursday and gets back tonight so I had a long time to feel sorry for myself and think of some mischief to get into.  I got a wild idea that I would take a mini-vacation to a little VRBO (Vacation Rental by Owner).  This little loft is above a neighbor’s garage and I’ve seen photos of it online and heard so many nice things about it, that I decided to have a one-woman sleepover there while Jim was gone on his adventure.

The pictures do NOT do it justice. It's even prettier than this!

The owners have spared nothing in making this not only functional and comfortable, but cozy and beautiful as well.

The attention to detail is unparalleled here and I couldn’t stop looking at all the touches that made this loft a perfect subject for COTTAGE LIVING MAGAZINE.

I actually brought some groceries and snacks to make my stay more fun and I had a good pal over for some wine and cheese soon after I got there.

The kitchen lacks NOTHING! Some real goor-met meals can be made here.

And even later that evening, a gaggle of females busted up in my crib to check out my little pleasure dome.  I had given up on having any company by then so I was wearing my super-sexy granny nightgown when they knocked on the door.  This is a site they will not soon forget, and a great honor that only a chosen few get to witness.

As the night wore on I was getting sleepy and looked forward to crawling into a very comfortable-looking bed.  Pets are not allowed, but I brought Buster to keep me company anyway.  Don’t tell anyone!  He was very quiet and didn’t make much of a mess.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhh.... Clanestine Bunny!

Shhhhhhhhhhhhh….

I slept beautifully,

Who wouldn't?

…and woke the next morning refreshed and feeling very pampered.  I made myself some coffee with the fancy Keurig machine with nearly 25 choices for coffee.  I then made a lovely breakfast and cleaned up after myself.  All this while my poor husband was sleeping on the ground and pooping in the woods.  (I’m so glad he doesn’t read my blog!)  Since we plan to turn our new little investment house into a VRBO, you can bet I was taking notes on how to do things right.  There are so many elements to think about and details to consider and my stay was like having a course in VRBO 101.

Now, if you want to check this little haven out you can go to this site to look at the calendar, check out some more pictures, and see the nightly rates. http://www.vrbo.com/307240

Oh, did I mention that this loft is only 375 square feet???

Thank you Dale & Rita!  I really enjoyed being “Queen For a Day!”

Teddy, Franklin, Eleanor & Me

Jim was gone on a trip for work last week, so while he was in Belgium spending your tax dollars I was home with my critters enjoying a great documentary on the Roosevelt family.  I’m an English teacher by training, but as a homebound teacher I’m usually required to instruct in all subjects for my students.  I found late in life that I have a real passion for history and a mild talent for teaching it.  One of my first experiences teaching history was a project a student had on American presidents.  They had to draw a name from a hat and do a report and an original monologue on their particular prez.  My kid got lucky and drew Theodore Roosevelt. We had a lot of fun learning about this iconic American president and I decided that the TEDSTER was my absolute favorite!  Whatever you can say about him you have to admit the guy certainly wasn’t boring!

So every night for a week, Mulder, Buster, the kittens and I settled down on the couch with a glass of vino (not the animals, just me) and enjoyed the show.  Usually we would all be awake for the first hour.

What's a "Roosevelt?"

What’s a “Roosevelt?”

And then slowly, one by one some of us would check out.

Why are there no kitties in this show?

Until eventually only two of us would remain awake.

The following Monday I had to return my foster kittens so they could be “fixed” and find forever homes.  I will miss them very much.

To console me, I think someone should buy this STEIFF animal for me.

Chicks and Kittens

My neighbors have some beautiful granddaughters and they enjoy visiting my petting zoo on occasion.  Last week I had three lovely ladies enjoy some foster kitten love.

In Bunny news, Graycie and Manny have moved into their outdoor love nest.  Their human mom, Mary has made them a comfortable hutch with soft ground underneath that they will soon “remodel” with burrows and tunnels.  All bunnies would prefer to live outdoors if they had a safe habitat and a way to keep cool and warm during the extreme months of the year.  Yes, we keep Buster inside, but that’s because he has been raised as a “house rabbit” and he doesn’t have a mate, so he prefers to live with his human family in the comforts of a house.

The problem with having a pet rabbit outdoors is that most people don’t take the pains that Mary does to provide a proper outdoor home for their pets.  It’s a very sad sight to see a lonely bunny living in a cage in the blazing sun, with nowhere to run and nothing do dig in.  If undertaken with knowledge and kindness, pet bunnies can enjoy a wonderful life in the safety of a yard in the care of a big-hearted human.  Such is the case with Graycie and Manny.  They are lucky buns to have found such a human.  I can’t wait to visit and see the bunny village where they live with many other fortunate buns in Sunny Florida.  🙂

Thank you Mary for making a lovely refuge for your creatures.  You’re one of the good ones. 🙂

Update on the Lovebunnies

Mary (Graycie’s new mom) sent me a picture of Graycie and her new beau, Manny, snuggling together after his recovery from his “snip-snip”.

Seems like these two have made a real love connection and I’m very happy for both of them and grateful to Mary who is an animal lover/rescuer extraordinaire!

It’s always surprising to me that when I find people who love bunnies, they often have chickens as pets as well.  Great minds…. 🙂

And if you’re needing an update on some other B’game creatures, here’s a sample of life on the ranch.

That’s all for now folks.  The kittens returned to the shelter for some shots and a weigh-in and it looks like I have them for a few more days.  Work on the cottage has halted while Jim is in Slovakia (I had to look it up on a map) and I continue to water the sod so it will survive until Fall finally makes an appearance here in Alabama. (HURRY UP!)

Konstruction & Kittens

PHASE ONE of the cottage renovations are done.  The little porch is now covered and the stairs have been narrowed and moved to the side.

Cute huh?

Of course we’ll paint it but that will come much later.  For now we’re just tweaking some things…

…and this week we’ll be taking measurements and making a drawing to submit to the ARB (Architectural Review Board) for the parking pad and carport.

When we’re not working on this project, we’re having fun with a smaller indoor project that’s a lot more fun and quite a bit less expensive.

Those are DECORATIVE guys!

Oh, and the first thing Jim did when he got back from his trip was to check out the three foster “sisters” I got from the shelter.  Turns out that two of the little girls are NOT. 🙂  Jim is an expert at sexing kittens and he’s available for all your kitten-sexing needs for a nominal fee (free).

Three Little Kittens…

…No need for mittens.  Not in this heat!  Meet my three new house guests for the next couple of weeks.

At first, they weren't too happy about their arrival at the Burlingame Kitten Farm.

Their names are Izzy, Brownie and Bobbie.  They’re supposed to be all girls, but Jim will verify that when he gets back from his trip.  He’s the master “kitten sexer”.  Don’t repeat that to anyone.  It could be taken the wrong way.  I named the first one “Bobbie” because she had a bobbed tail.  Then I noticed another one had a bobbed tail as well.  I’m hoping they were born this way.  The alternative is unthinkable.  😦

And in “fixer-upper” news.  Phase one of our little cottage renovation is complete.  The stairs have been moved to the side and a roof is over the porch.  I think it turned out GREAT!  I invite my neighbors to do a drive by the back of 68 Boardwalk and take a gander.  Pouring the parking pad will come later.  For now we’ll take a breather on the construction projects.  I highly recommend John and Robert.  Extremely hard-working guys who take pride in their workmanship.  Message me for their contact info if you have any manly projects that need doing around your home.

And I did say they were easy on the eyes didn't I?

Hurry home Jim!

Graycie & Manny Sittin’ in a Tree…

Gracyie loves her new home and REALLY loves her new boyfriend!  Manny recently returned from the vet where he had the “surgery that shall not be named!”  He has to be isolated while he heals and Graycie was there to welcome him home.

Manny come out and play with me.

They did WHAT to you???

I'll be right here if you need me. :(
